Kia Sonet Gets 1-Star Global NCAP Safety Rating

The Kia Sonet has received a disappointing 1-star safety rating in the latest Global NCAP crash tests conducted under the Safer Cars for Africa programme. The result has once again highlighted the importance of vehicle safety, which is becoming a major factor for car buyers across the world.
According to Global NCAP, the tested Sonet was manufactured in India and exported to South Africa. In the crash test, the compact SUV scored 1 star for Adult Occupant Protection and 3 stars for Child Occupant Protection.
What Did the Crash Test Reveal?
The crash test report showed that the Kia Sonet could not perform strongly in some key areas related to adult passenger safety. While the SUV provided a basic level of protection in certain impact situations, the overall score was not enough to earn a higher safety rating.
Global NCAP also noted that protection for some important body areas was limited during the crash test. The tested model was equipped with dual front airbags, and the rating applies specifically to that variant.
Child Safety Performance Was Better
While the adult safety rating was disappointing, the Sonet performed better when it came to protecting child occupants. The SUV received a 3-star rating for child safety, showing that it offered a better level of protection for children compared to adults. However, Global NCAP believes there is still scope for improvement in both crash protection and overall safety equipment.
Why Is This Important?
The Kia Sonet is one of the brand's most popular compact SUVs and is sold in several international markets. Today, many buyers look at crash test ratings before making a purchase decision, making vehicle safety more important than ever. This latest result shows how important strong vehicle structures, better safety systems and advanced protection technologies have become in modern cars.
Does This Rating Apply to the India-Spec Kia Sonet?
It is important to understand that the vehicle tested by Global NCAP was a South Africa-spec Kia Sonet under the Safer Cars for Africa programme. Features and safety equipment can vary from one market to another.
Because of this, the crash test result should not be directly considered as the official safety rating for all Kia Sonet models sold in India. Customers should always check the safety features and specifications of the exact variant they plan to buy.
Safety Features Offered in the Kia Sonet

The current Kia Sonet sold in India comes with several safety features, including:
Six airbags as standard
Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
Vehicle Stability Management (VSM)
Hill Start Assist Control
ABS with EBD
Rear parking sensors
Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
ISOFIX child seat mounts
Final Thoughts
The 1-star Global NCAP rating is not the kind of result Kia would have hoped for. Although the tested Sonet offered better protection for child occupants, its adult safety performance fell short of expectations.
As more buyers pay attention to vehicle safety, crash test ratings are likely to play an even bigger role in influencing purchasing decisions in the future. Carmakers are also expected to focus more on improving safety standards across all variants and markets.
