Hyundai Leads Hydrogen Economy

Hyundai Motor Group has announced a big partnership to build a complete hydrogen ecosystem in Hong Kong. The agreement was signed during the International Hydrogen Development Symposium 2026 held in Hong Kong from May 18 to May 20, 2026.

This project brings together companies from Korea, Hong Kong, China Mainland, and France to support clean energy development and improve hydrogen infrastructure in the region. Hyundai Motor Group also plans to use Hong Kong as an important base for expanding its hydrogen business across the Asia-Pacific market.

Focus on Clean Hydrogen Energy

Under this project, Hyundai Motor Group will focus on:

  • Producing low-carbon hydrogen

  • Developing hydrogen refueling stations

  • Deploying hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles

The company will use its Waste-to-Hydrogen (W2H) technology, which helps convert waste resources into clean hydrogen fuel. Hyundai already has experience with similar hydrogen projects in Korea and Indonesia.

Why Hong Kong Was Selected

Hyundai said Hong Kong has strong future potential for hydrogen energy because the city is aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The Hong Kong government has also introduced its Hydrogen Roadmap along with support programs for hydrogen vehicles and infrastructure.

The company believes hydrogen can become an important clean energy solution for Hong Kong because the city depends heavily on imported energy and has limited renewable energy resources.

Hydrogen Buses and Refueling Stations

As part of the project, Hyundai plans to introduce hydrogen fuel cell buses in Hong Kong, including airport shuttle buses and tourism transport vehicles. The company will also develop hydrogen refueling stations at busy locations across the city. HTWO Guangzhou, Hyundai’s overseas fuel cell system facility, will supply fuel cell systems for these hydrogen commercial vehicles.
