India's most anticipated family electric SUV is almost here. The Tata Safari EV is set to become the country's first three-row electric SUV, and it is arriving sooner than you think.

  • Production set to begin from August 2026 at Tata's Pune facility

  • Will rival the Mahindra XEV 9S directly

Tata Motors will launch a proper three-row electric SUV for family buyers. The Safari EV will take the position of Tata's flagship electric car, currently held by the Harrier EV, and will also be the brand's first-ever three-row electric offering. Codenamed 'Tayrona', this is the electric SUV that completes Tata's entire EV portfolio — once it launches, every current Tata SUV will be available with both ICE and EV powertrains.

Tata's Upcoming 3-Row EV Launch Date

Tata is expected to commence production of the Safari EV by August 2026, ahead of the electric SUV's planned festive season launch. The expected launch window is Q4 2026, which falls between October and December, right during the Diwali buying season. This makes it one of the most exciting new cars launches of the festive period this year.

Platform and Architecture

Codenamed 'Tayrona', the Safari EV will be underpinned by the same acti.ev+ platform as the Harrier EV. It is worth noting that this is an ICE-to-EV conversion, not a born-EV architecture. However, that has not stopped Tata from packing in serious tech. The Safari EV will benefit from Tata's TiDAL (Tata Intelligent Digital Architecture Layer) E&E system, which enables over-the-air updates, a 540-degree surround view, improved Level 2 ADAS, auto park assist, low-speed cruise control, UPI-based in-car payments and a summon mode for remote vehicle movement.

Battery, Range and Performance

Tata Motors will likely offer the Safari EV in a single-motor RWD variant and a dual-motor AWD variant, using a Schaeffler-made permanent magnet synchronous motor producing 175kW (235hp) and 304Nm of torque on the rear axle. Customers may get a choice of 65kWh and 75kWh LFP battery packs, though the 65kWh option is highly unlikely to be offered with the dual-motor AWD variant. The Harrier EV currently delivers a claimed range of up to 627km, but since the Safari is larger and heavier, its range is expected to be slightly lower — though a 500km-plus figure on the top-spec 75kWh AWD variant is widely anticipated.

Design — What Will It Look Like?

The Safari EV's design will remain largely identical to its ICE counterpart, with the silhouette and several body panels shared between the two. The electric version will, however, get EV-specific styling tweaks like a closed-off front grille, redesigned bumpers, EV badges and aero-optimised alloy wheels. Think of it as the Safari you already know — just cleaner, sharper and more futuristic-looking at the front.

Tata's 3-Row EV Price

The estimated base price for the Safari EV starts at around Rs 26.50 lakh for the 65kWh RWD variant, going up to Rs 32 lakh for the fully loaded 75kWh AWD variant. For reference, the Harrier EV is currently priced between Rs 21.49 lakh and Rs 28.99 lakh (ex-showroom, excluding charger costs). Since the Safari is larger and sits above the Harrier in Tata's lineup, a slight price premium over the Harrier EV is expected. The Safari EV will primarily lock horns with the Mahindra XEV 9S in the Rs 22.5 lakh to Rs 30 lakh ballpark.

What About the Tiago and Tigor Facelifts?

The Safari EV is not the only big thing coming from Tata. The brand is also reportedly planning four facelifts in the pipeline — likely covering the ICE and EV versions of the Tiago hatchback and Tigor compact sedan. Test mules of an updated Tiago EV have already been spotted on Indian roads, and the refreshed Tiago and Tigor EVs could feature Tata's new 6-in-1 drivetrain that debuted with the 2026 Punch EV facelift — bringing improved efficiency and performance to Tata's most affordable electric models.

Why Does This Matter?

The Safari EV launch signals that practical, family-friendly electric mobility in India has finally grown up. A three-row electric SUV with 500km-plus range, Level 2 ADAS, AWD capability and a starting price under Rs 30 lakh is genuinely compelling for Indian families who want to go electric without any compromises. If Tata prices it right and delivers on the range promise, the Safari EV could be the electric SUV that finally convinces fence-sitters to make the switch.

All specifications and prices are based on industry reports and estimates. Official figures will be confirmed by Tata Motors at the time of launch.
