Maruti Wagon R Bioflex Launched at Rs 7.24 Lakh with E85 Compatibility

Maruti Suzuki India has officially launched the Wagon R Bioflex at an introductory price of Rs 7.24 lakh (ex-showroom), making it India's first mass-market passenger car capable of running on high-ethanol fuel blends. The launch marks a significant step in the government's push towards cleaner and alternative fuels, reducing dependence on imported crude oil and promoting sustainable mobility solutions in India.
The production-spec Wagon R Flex Fuel was unveiled on June 4, 2026, in the presence of Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, and Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri. The vehicle had previously been showcased as a prototype at Auto Expo 2023 and the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024 before entering production.
What is Special About the Wagon R Bioflex?
The biggest highlight of the Wagon R Bioflex is its ability to run on ethanol-petrol blends ranging from E20 to E85, giving customers the flexibility to use different fuel compositions depending on availability. In simple terms, E85 fuel contains 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent petrol.
Unlike a conventional petrol vehicle, the Wagon R Bioflex has received several mechanical and electronic upgrades to handle higher ethanol content safely and efficiently. These include:
Upgraded fuel injectors and fuel pump
New ethanol-resistant fuel lines
Recalibrated engine control unit (ECU)
Dedicated ethanol sensor that automatically detects the ethanol percentage in the fuel tank and adjusts engine parameters accordingly
Corrosion-resistant components designed for long-term use with ethanol-based fuels.
Maruti says the vehicle's underlying technology is capable of supporting even higher ethanol concentrations, with the production model technically compliant with E100 fuel, although it has currently been homologated for E85 operation in India.
The hatchback also retains the practicality that made the Wagon R popular, including its spacious cabin, tall-boy design and family-friendly packaging. On the outside, the Bioflex version gets special "Flex Fuel" decals and a "BioFlex" badge on the tailgate to distinguish it from the standard model.
Engine and Transmission

The Wagon R Bioflex is powered by Maruti Suzuki's trusted 1.2-litre K12N four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The company has not yet disclosed the exact power and torque figures for the flex-fuel version, but the engine has been significantly re-engineered to work efficiently with high-ethanol blends.
The key changes to the powertrain include:
Modified combustion settings to accommodate ethanol fuel.
New engine calibration for smoother operation across different ethanol blends.
Enhanced fuel delivery system.
Ethanol-content sensing technology that automatically optimizes engine performance depending on the fuel mixture being used.
Because ethanol has different combustion characteristics than petrol, the engine management system continuously adjusts ignition timing and fuel delivery to ensure reliability and efficiency. Maruti has also not announced official fuel-efficiency figures for the Bioflex model yet.
Price and Positioning
Maruti Suzuki has priced the Wagon R Bioflex at Rs 7.24 lakh (ex-showroom), making it approximately Rs 86,000 more expensive than the top-spec petrol-manual Wagon R ZXi+ variant.
The premium primarily comes from:
Ethanol-compatible engine components.
Additional sensors and electronic systems.
Upgraded fuel system.
Special engineering required for high-ethanol compatibility.
Even with the higher price, the Wagon R Bioflex remains one of the most affordable alternative-fuel passenger cars in India and could become attractive to fleet operators and cost-conscious buyers once E85 fuel becomes widely available.
Why is Ethanol Important?
The Indian government has been aggressively promoting ethanol-blended fuels as part of its long-term energy strategy. Ethanol is produced domestically from agricultural feedstocks such as:
Sugarcane
Corn
Broken rice
Other agricultural biomass.
Higher ethanol adoption offers several benefits:
1. Reduced Oil Imports
India imports a large portion of its crude oil requirements. Increasing ethanol usage can reduce the country's dependence on imported fossil fuels and improve energy security.
2. Lower Emissions
Ethanol burns cleaner than conventional petrol and can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions over a vehicle's lifecycle.
3. Better Income for Farmers
Large-scale ethanol production creates additional demand for agricultural produce, providing new revenue opportunities for Indian farmers.
4. Support for India's Net-Zero Goals
The adoption of flex-fuel vehicles is considered an important part of India's broader strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.
The Biggest Challenge: E85 Fuel Availability
While the technology is now available, the biggest hurdle remains the availability of E85 fuel stations. At present, E85 dispensing infrastructure is extremely limited in India. However, the government has announced plans to significantly expand the network and reportedly aims to have around 5,000 E85 fuel dispensers by the end of 2027.

Final Thoughts
With the launch of the Wagon R Bioflex, Maruti Suzuki has introduced a completely new alternative-fuel technology to the Indian passenger vehicle market. The car combines the practicality of the Wagon R with the flexibility of running on high-ethanol fuels, making it an important milestone for India's cleaner mobility ambitions. However, its real success will largely depend on how quickly the country's E85 fuel infrastructure expands in the coming years.
