Maruti Ignis Discontinued in India? New Micro SUV

There’s increasing speculation that the Maruti Suzuki Ignis may have been quietly discontinued in India because of its low sales. As per reports, demand for the car has been falling for quite some time, and recent monthly sales have come down to around 1,800–2,000 units, which makes it one of the least-selling cars in Maruti Suzuki’s lineup.
Overall, the Ignis did manage to cross around 3 lakh units in total sales since launch, but in the last few years, more people have started choosing SUVs, which has affected its demand. Dealers are also saying that production has been stopped for over a month now, and bookings are no longer being accepted. However, the company has not given any official confirmation yet, and the car is still listed on its website, which is confusing many customers. At the same time, there are chances that Maruti may bring a new micro SUV as a replacement, as the demand for SUV-style cars is growing in India.
Ignis in India: A Short Market Journey

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis was launched in 2017 as a stylish and compact car mainly aimed at young buyers in cities. It received a few updates over the years, including a facelift in 2020, but its design got mixed responses from people. While Maruti Suzuki tried to keep the car updated, it could not perform well in terms of sales. This was mainly because its positioning was not very clear and there was no diesel option available. At the same time, the rising demand for compact SUVs also reduced its popularity in the market.
Ignis Replacement: What’s Coming Next?
Recent reports suggest that Maruti Suzuki is working on a new micro SUV, internally called Y43, which could replace the Maruti Suzuki Ignis in the coming time. This new model is expected to launch around 2027 and will likely compete with cars like the Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch. The company may offer different engine options, including petrol with mild-hybrid, CNG and even an electric version.
It is likely to get a 1.2L petrol engine with hybrid support, and there are also chances of a 1.0L turbo petrol engine being used. Some reports also say that this SUV could come with a new strong hybrid system in the future, which can help in giving better mileage. If everything goes as expected, this new SUV could turn out to be one of the most fuel-efficient and budget-friendly options in Maruti’s lineup.
