BYD First Hybrid Car India Debut June 9 Full Details

BYD is getting ready to enter India’s hybrid car segment with its first plug-in hybrid vehicle, which will debut on June 9. The upcoming model will use BYD’s DM-i hybrid technology that combines a petrol engine with electric power for better fuel efficiency and longer driving range.
Reports suggest the company may introduce the BYD Sealion 6 or another hybrid SUV already available in global markets. As hybrid vehicles are becoming more popular among Indian buyers, this launch could play an important role in BYD’s growth plans for India.
New Model To Feature BYD’s DM-i Hybrid Technology

The upcoming vehicle will use BYD’s advanced DM-i (Dual Mode – Intelligent) Super Hybrid technology. This setup combines a petrol engine with an electric powertrain to improve fuel efficiency while also delivering long-distance driving capability.
The system includes BYD’s Blade Battery, electric motors, power electronics, controller units, and an intelligent energy management system designed to switch smoothly between petrol and electric power.
How The DM-i System Works
In daily driving conditions, the vehicle mainly operates like a pure electric car, with the battery powering the electric motor most of the time. This helps reduce fuel consumption and provides a quieter driving experience.
When the battery charge drops, the petrol engine starts working as a generator to produce electricity, while the electric motor continues driving the wheels. At higher highway speeds, the petrol engine can also directly power the wheels for improved efficiency.
Atto 2 DM-i And Sealion 6 Among Strong Possibilities
BYD has not officially confirmed the model name yet, but reports suggest the company could introduce either the Atto 2 DM-i or the Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid SUV in India. Both models are already available in several international markets.
BYD Atto 2 DM-i Powertrain Details

Globally, the BYD Atto 2 DM-i comes with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with either a 7.8kWh or an 18kWh battery pack. Depending on the variant, the SUV produces up to 212bhp.
The smaller battery version claims a combined driving range of around 928km, while the larger battery option can deliver nearly 998km on a full tank and charge combined.
BYD Sealion 6 Could Offer Over 1,000km Range
The BYD Sealion 6 PHEV is offered internationally with both naturally aspirated and turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine options. Battery choices include 18.3kWh and 26.6kWh units.
The SUV offers a claimed combined range of up to 1,092km. The front-wheel-drive version produces around 218bhp and offers an electric-only range of up to 140km, while the all-wheel-drive turbo variant generates up to 344bhp.
BYD Expanding Its Presence In India
BYD’s hybrid debut could help the company attract buyers looking for better fuel efficiency along with reduced charging dependency. With hybrid vehicles gaining popularity in India, the upcoming launch could become an important step for BYD’s expansion strategy in the country.
