Nissan’s New Hybrid SUV – Built in China, Coming to India?
China-developed hybrid SUV may support Nissan Motor Co.’s India comeback

Nissan Motor Co. is planning a strong return in India with a new plug-in hybrid SUV. The model has been developed in China with support from Dongfeng Motor Corporation, focusing on lower cost and faster production. It was recently showcased at the Beijing Auto Show 2026, hinting at its global plans. If approved, this SUV could become an important product for Nissan in India’s growing premium SUV segment.
Showcased in China, Built for Global Markets

Nissan Motor Co. recently showed its new plug-in hybrid SUV concepts at the Beijing Auto Show 2026. These models are developed with Dongfeng Motor Corporation, which helps Nissan reduce cost and speed up development. One model that stands out is the Terrano-based hybrid SUV, mainly because of its strong and practical design. It looks suitable for markets like India, where buyers prefer tough and reliable SUVs.
India Launch Possibility and Strategy Shift
Right now, Nissan is checking whether this SUV can be launched in India or not. There is no official confirmation yet, but the company has already said it wants to bring better and more advanced cars to India, instead of only rebadged models. If everything goes as planned, this SUV could launch around 2026–2027. This will also match the growing demand for hybrid cars and stricter emission rules in India.
Hybrid Tech with Strong SUV Performance
This SUV is expected to come with a plug-in hybrid system, which means it will use both a petrol engine and electric motors. It can run on electric power for short distances and also give better fuel efficiency compared to normal petrol or diesel SUVs.
At the same time, it may be built on a ladder-frame platform, which is usually used in strong off-road vehicles. This means the SUV can offer both good mileage and strong performance, which is not very common in this segment.
Local Production and Market Positioning
For India, Nissan may use its Chennai plant to produce this SUV, which can help keep the price under control. The expected price could be around ₹35–40 lakh (ex-showroom). In this range, it will compete with SUVs like the Toyota Fortuner and Jeep Meridian. However, the hybrid technology can give it an extra advantage for buyers who want better fuel efficiency without moving to a fully electric car.
