Mahindra Builds Rugged Thar Roxx-Based ATV for Indian Army

Anand Mahindra's latest reveal is a new defence-spec ATV built on the Thar Roxx platform. While it’s designed for military use,a stripped-back, tactical all-terrain vehicle is turning heads not just in military circles is turning heads not just in military circles, but among civilian off-road enthusiasts.
The vehicle rides on heavy-duty off-road tyres with noticeably higher ground clearance than the standard Roxx, and its open-body structure prioritises visibility, durability and ease of operation in hostile terrain. Perhaps most striking of all is its airdrop-readiness — a capability that signals potential airborne deployment with India's armed forces.

The regular doors have been replaced with lightweight metal pipe frames, making the ATV lighter, easier to get in and out of, and improving visibility. The roof is removed and swapped for a strong roll cage, which can also support a 360-degree gun mount. It rides on 18-inch all-terrain tyres with higher ground clearance, helping it handle rough terrain with ease. For added durability, it gets rock sliders on the sides and underbody protection, while the rear carries a jerrycan for extra fuel and two spare wheels for long missions.

Mahindra hasn’t shared the engine details yet, but going by the Thar Roxx, this ATV could use either a 2.2-litre diesel (around 172 hp and 370 Nm) or a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol (about 174 hp and 380 Nm). For defence use, though, it’s likely the engine will be specially tuned or made more powerful to handle tough conditions, paired with a standard 4WD setup. In some situations—especially at high altitudes—a petrol engine might even be preferred.
This isn’t the first time Mahindra has built a vehicle for the Indian armed forces.
